Cool Places, North Carolina

As I get ready for another year of hiking, camping, canoeing, and backpacking, I figured I'd list a few very cool places where I've spent time here in my adopted state of North Carolina.

Shining Rock and Middle Prong Wilderness Areas (side by side in the Pisgah National Forest).

Granny Burrell Falls, Panthertown Valley, Pisgah National Forest.

Tuckaseegee River, Panthertown Valley.

Sauratown Mountains, Hanging Rock State Park.

Along the Dan River.

Stone Mountain State Park (the one in North Carolina, not Georgia).

Bull Elk, Cataloochee, Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Kings Pinnacle, Crowder Mountain State Park, Gastonia North Carolina.Big Cataloochee Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Shinning Rock is probaly the best in my opinion, it has breath taking views and is awesome, and the hike to it, from the Park Way, through the huge fileds is beatiful.

I like Shining Rock quite a lot. My only problem with it is the huge crowds of people. It's so beautiful and so accessible--these factors make for enormous crowds that ruin the experience for me.

But you can find solitude in there if you go at just the right times.
