The latest acquisition for my Ditko/Kirby collection was this nifty issue of STRANGE TALES #85. The first time I walked into my dad's warehouse packed with comics, the thing that caught my eye right off the bat were the pre-hero Marvels that were stacked up on the tables. They were bright and garish and featured the coolest monsters I'd ever seen! I was hooked. Eventually, I'll land them all. For now, I'm chipping away at putting together various sets.
The cool thing about this issue is that I think the main story (featuring the monster Gargantus of the cover) has never been reprinted. At least, that's my suspicion. The book has the Kirby feature story, followed by a Paul Reinman weird tale, and ends with a really neat Steve Ditko story. All in all, a fine purchase.

I always loved the Ditko/Kirby big-space-monsters-who-wear-underwear era. Where Monsters Dwell, Creatures On The Loose and so many more.
Seems I read an essay about the monsters who wore the underwear. And I think most of those were Kirby monsters, most famous among them being Fin Fang Foom, of course.
And worst yet, they NEVER changed their shorts! Ewwwww!
They may have changed their shorts. Someone should write a story about that fact.
