Strange Tales #99

This is the latest addition to the pre-hero section of my Marvel collection. By the time this book hit the stands Marvel was already doing superhero comics. And the company's owner Goodman and his nephew Stan Lee realized that superhero books were the way to go. Only one more issue of Strange Tales would appear with an all-monster format. With issue #101 the book would contain at least one superhero story from then on, with the Human Torch holding down the title for a while before Dr. Strange joined as a backup feature. Pretty soon the strange monster yarns vanished entirely, even as backups stories.

Alas.

Strange Tales #99, two issues before the superheroes invaded the title forever.

I used to collect Strange Tales and accumulated quite a few. Dr. Strange is my favorite superhero. One issue in my collection that comes to mind is a battle between Dr. Strange and Thor. Dr. Strange used a whole bag of tricks to hold his own against the Thunder God.

I don't recall that story. Sounds like it would have been a lot of fun to read, though!
